This week’s assignment from the league:
Who would you take in an 80′s character fantasy draft? Your team’s goal will be to defeat a shady conglomerate of Russian businessmen and their team of hired ninjas. It’s go time.
I have to admit, I was a little conflicted about this week’s topic. As you all know, I hate Russian terrorists, but happen to love ninjas. How could I combat one while simultaneously ignoring my love for the other? And then I remembered – ninjas are completely amoral, and since these guys are basically mercenaries, I’m sure they could forgive my 80’s hit squad for demolishing them. But who would be on this anti-Russian dream team? Which heroes are G.I. Joe enough to carry out this mission?
This week, the League of Extraordinary Bloggers has a different sort of mission. Our assignment: Who cried when Old Yeller got shot? What movie, TV show, book, etc. turns you into a blubbering baby every time you see it?
I’ll admit; this was a tough assignment. You see, I’m a very manly sort of man, the kind of man who can’t be easily reduced to tears. I spend my time doing manly things. Manly men things like wrangling giant tusked spider bears, getting into manly street fights with my friends Billy and Jimmy, and giving birth to babies.
But as manly manful as I am, my eyes still have tear ducts, atrophied as they may be. Begrudgingly, I will admit there may have been times my eyes have manlily (mannishly?) wet themselves during moments of pop culture distress. Grab some tissues and take my hand. We’re about to revisit some tear-jerking moments from days gone by.
Ok, first of all, I apologize for having gone missing for so long. The job switch, scheduling conflicts, and holiday all got the best of me. That was totally my bad. I’ll be more careful from now on. So sorry.
Now that the apologies are out of the way, we can move on to the next order of business…Friday Flashbacks! As always, I present to you a few entertainment suggestions to help get you through your weekend. Follow my advice this week – it’s way too hot to be outside. Onward…
Yeah, yeah, I know – it’s not actually Friday. I’m still getting adjusted to writing with my new job and new schedule, so I’m a little behind this week. I hope I didn’t ruin your yesterday by not posting.
This week’s Friday Flashbacks is all about sci-fi. You can thank my little brother for that. I woke up this morning to a picture message of a comic book cover. It was my brother’s first comic book that he actually read for enjoyment, and the first title he followed on a monthly basis. Consequently, it’s going to be this week’s comic book flashbacks choice. I thought I’d tie it in with a piece I’m doing for a group called The League of Extraordinary Bloggers, a group I just joined. It’s a collection of like-minded bloggers who, once a week, take a shared theme and write their own take on it. This week’s theme: Kurt Russell.
On to the picks!
If you didn’t already know, today marks the release of Lego Batman 2 for the XBox 360, PS3, and everything else.
If you haven’t played the Lego games yet, go out and buy one. They come in all sorts of flavors (Star Wars! Batman! Pirates! And soon, Frodo!), and they’re a great way to kill some time. If you have kids, get a title for them. Our five year old plays Lego Star Wars like it’s his job.
Lego Batman 2 looks fantastic. In addition to the addictively fun gameplay we’ve come to expect from the Lego line, this title features the debut of the DC roster of heroes. Now you can play as a square-bodied Aquaman, which is everyone’s dream come true!
Hey friends. Working on more thought-provoking, insightful ideas for the blog. While you’re waiting on my newest flash of brilliance, I thought I’d pass on a few ideas to give your weekend a pick-me-up.
This week, I’ve got a comic, a game, and an item from my Netflix queue for you. Yes, they’re all a bit older, but that means they’re CHEAPER, which is always a good thing. Hopefully you’ll get the chance to give these a try and let me know what you think.
